The Modern Grandad Story

Grandad used to be easy to understand.

He was older. He knew things. He had retired. He lived nearby. He had time.

There was a fairly well-worn script.

But the world changed.

Childhood changed. Parenting changed. Men changed. Work changed. We started living longer.

And somehow, we're still asking 2026 men to perform a 1960s role.

I started Modern Grandad because I found myself asking this question:

What are grandads for now?

Not what should grandads do.

Not how to become the perfect grandparent.

And not another list of activities to keep the grandchildren entertained.

Just:

What does a grandad have to offer now?

Because becoming a grandad today is different from becoming one a generation ago.

Many of us grew up in an analogue world and spent our working lives adapting to a digital one. We've had careers, changed careers, raised families, made mistakes, started again.

We've lived through enormous change.

And now we're living long enough to have another chapter.

That makes me wonder whether grandadding is more than a hobby we take up after retirement.

Perhaps it's a twist on a familiar stage of adult life.

A chance to be useful in a different way.

A chance to bring experience without always bringing answers.

A chance to give a child access to another generation, another perspective, another adult who has time to notice.

And perhaps, along the way, to discover that becoming a grandad isn't the end of your story.

It might be the beginning of a new one.

That's what Modern Grandad is exploring.

I'm interested in what happens when we stop treating grandad as a role inherited from the past and start asking what the role might mean now.

Because children don't need another adult telling them how to live.

But they do need adults who are present, curious, interested and willing to bring them along.

And men don't necessarily need another project.

They may simply need a reason to keep contributing.

So this isn't a guide to being a better grandad.

It's an exploration of a bigger question:

What are grandads for now?

And maybe the answer isn't about doing more for our grandchildren.

Maybe it's about becoming someone worth having around.
